PPI describes the image on paper. The printer's ink-dot DPI and a scanner's capture DPI are different measurements. Changing a DPI metadata tag alone does not add image detail.

## Crop, borders and framing

A4 paper measures 210 × 297 mm. The full-sheet calculation assumes that entire area is printable. Many printers reserve margins, and borderless modes may enlarge and trim the image. Use the printer's actual printable rectangle when exact edges matter.

## A worked example

A 2400 × 3600 portrait fills A4 at about 290 PPI after trimming its long edge. Fit mode preserves the full photograph with side borders. Printer margins reduce the image area further, so check the print dialog's preview.

## How many pixels is an A4 photo at 300 PPI?

Rounding up from the exact millimetre dimensions gives 2481 × 3508 pixels. The required size changes with margins, orientation and your print provider's specification.

## Prepare your restored photograph

Keep an untouched scan. Review faces, writing and fine details before printing an AI edit. A larger pixel count can include inferred detail; it does not certify historical accuracy. Order a small proof before a valuable enlargement.
