# 8 × 10 inch Photo Print Size Calculator

Calculate the resolution needed for an 8x10 photo print and check the crop. Compare 150, 240 and 300 PPI before enlarging a restored portrait.

## Pixel dimensions for 8 × 10 inch prints

Paper dimensions: 203.2 × 254 mm, or 20.32 × 25.4 cm.

Required pixels = print dimensions in inches × pixels per inch (PPI), rounded up. These comparison values are planning targets; follow your print provider's requirements.

Pixel requirements, short edge × long edge| Print resolution | Pixel dimensions |
| --- | --- |
| 150 PPI | 1,200 × 1,500 px |
| --- |
| 240 PPI | 1,920 × 2,400 px |
| --- |
| 300 PPI | 2,400 × 3,000 px |
| --- |

PPI describes the image on paper. The printer's ink-dot DPI and a scanner's capture DPI are different measurements. Changing a DPI metadata tag alone does not add image detail.

## Will your image fit this print?

Enter the original file's pixel dimensions. This calculator checks both orientations and uses no uploads.

Image width (pixels)Image height (pixels)

Fill paper (crop)**300 PPI**

Image area removed**16.7%**

Pixels after crop (short × long edge)**2,400 × 3,000 px**

Fit whole image (borders)**6.7 × 10 in at 360 PPI**

Proportions only, shown upright. The fill illustration uses a centered crop; your lab may position or trim it differently.

These are geometric estimates. They do not measure sharpness or simulate your printer's crop position, margins or bleed.

## Crop, borders and framing

An 8 × 10 enlargement uses a 4:5 ratio. It crops a 2:3 photograph more than a same-ratio enlargement would. For an irreplaceable portrait, use borders if trimming would remove shoulders, a uniform or an inscription. Inspect restoration detail at the intended print size.

## A worked example

A 2400 × 3600 portrait crops to 2400 × 3000 for a borderless 8 × 10 at 300 PPI. About 16.7% of its area is removed. A smaller file can print, but increasing its pixel count does not prove that historical detail was recovered.

## Is changing the DPI tag enough for an 8 × 10 enlargement?

No. The available pixels after cropping determine effective PPI. Changing a metadata tag alone adds no pixels or detail; resampling can create pixels but cannot guarantee authentic missing detail.

## Prepare your restored photograph

Keep an untouched scan. Review faces, writing and fine details before printing an AI edit. A larger pixel count can include inferred detail; it does not certify historical accuracy. Order a small proof before a valuable enlargement.
