# X Profile Photo Size: Prepare a 400×400 Image

Prepare a 400×400 X profile image. Check a square crop or padded wordmark, and inspect the under-2-MB profile-photo rule separately from pixel size.

## Which dimensions should you use?

X recommends 400×400 pixels for profile images and a maximum file size of 2 MB. Its help article supports JPEG, GIF and PNG; this calculator exports a still PNG or JPEG copy.

## Compose this image

Use a portrait or short logo that remains clear when the avatar is small.

Leave space around the mark and inspect the actual avatar mask after upload.

A profile image and a header have different composition needs even when they share branding.

## A worked example

A 900×1200 source fills this 400×400 canvas with a crop of about 900×900 source pixels, retaining 75.0% of its area. Filling needs no enlargement. The square crop removes portrait height; keep the face and hair inside the retained area.

## Before you upload

- Check that the full identity mark survives the square preparation.
- Inspect the file's byte size after export.
- Apply the uploaded image in X and review the displayed avatar.

“Keep whole image” is also called fit or contain; it adds white borders instead of trimming the scene. The exporter sets pixel dimensions and placement. It does not enforce platform byte limits or predict every device’s display crop. [Compress a copy](<https://restorebunny.com/tools/image-compress/>) if you need a smaller file, then check the destination’s preview.

## Questions about X Profile Photo

### Will the downloaded square look exactly like my X avatar?

The file preview shows the exported canvas. X's own avatar display and mask are a separate review.

### Does this create an animated profile image?

No. The export is a still image. Use the platform's current profile-image workflow and supported file rules.
