Quick answer

## The short version

Look for the uncropped original before generating new edges. Outpainting can invent a plausible extension, but it cannot establish what was outside a saved crop.

## A capture or editing plan

Check the camera original, editing history and any wider export first. If the missing scene is available, restore the crop from that source. If it is not, decide whether invented surroundings are acceptable for the intended use. Keep the cropped source and label any generated version clearly. Review transitions where the existing scene meets the extension.

## When to change the approach

Use the real source for evidence, documentary or condition photographs. A visually convincing extension does not turn invented surroundings into captured information.

## Worked planning example

Planning example: A square export cuts off a room doorway. A wider camera file can restore the doorway accurately. If only the square remains, a generated doorway would be a new interpretation, not recovery of the original architecture.

## If the first attempt fails

If you find several similar files, compare their edge content before declaring one the original. A larger file can still be an enlarged crop. Look for actual scene information outside the saved frame, then check that the central subject and capture moment match. When no wider source exists, document the new extension as an edit and retain the unchanged cropped file beside it.

## Before you finish

1. Search for a wider source first.
2. Separate recovery from generation.
3. Label and inspect any invented area.
