Quick answer

## The short version

Share a full-width master or access copy plus clearly labelled detail panels and a position map. Fit the whole panorama for context, then let people inspect faces without losing their place. Check the destination's resizing and avoid treating an enlarged crop as extra captured detail.

## A whole panorama and a readable face view serve different tasks

A long group photograph can become a narrow strip on a phone. Cropping to one face makes it readable but removes the companions and position that may help identification. Deliver both levels: a whole-image context view and linked detail panels. Keep the source panorama intact, and make the panels derivatives with clear coverage labels.

The Library of Congress' analysis tools encourage observing small details in context. A panel system supports that task without inventing source information. It differs from capturing an oversized original: this guide starts with an existing complete digital image and plans how relatives can view and respond to it. Capture geometry and handling problems still need their own workflow.

## Map people by position before assigning names

Use row and left-to-right positions in the whole view, with a key that states the orientation. If the image's mirroring is unresolved, say so before using left-right identifiers. Give each detail panel a region label such as 'front row, positions 1–6', and keep overlap where it helps a viewer reconnect panels to the complete image.

Do not put permanent guessed names into the panel itself. Keep provisional identification notes in a companion sheet linked to positions and photo IDs. If relatives disagree, preserve their accounts rather than replacing the visible label immediately. A clear position map allows the same person to be discussed across a full view, a close crop and a later restored derivative.

## Worked example: a 6000×1200 panorama on a small screen

If a 6000×1200 panorama is displayed 1200 pixels wide, its displayed height is 240 pixels. A face 90 pixels wide in the source becomes about 18 displayed pixels across. That explains why the overview is difficult for identification, even though the file is large. The calculation describes display scaling, not the viewer's exact device behaviour.

Create four overlapping source-based panels, each roughly 1800 pixels wide, and share them at a useful size. Keep panel coordinates or region labels so overlapping people are not counted twice. A face in a panel can be easier to inspect because it is displayed larger; no extra historical detail was captured. Check the saved and received panels, as a messaging system may shrink them again.

## Build a two-level viewing package

1. Retain the complete panorama and make an overview copy that shows both ends. Label it with photo ID, row orientation and the purpose of the detail panels.
2. Define panel regions around meaningful groups, using overlap where helpful. Save source-based crops and record their coordinates or clear position ranges.
3. Create a companion identification key with row, position, proposed name, source account and uncertainty. Keep sensitive notes in the private version.
4. Transfer a test overview and one panel to the intended recipient or device. Inspect actual dimensions and readability rather than assuming the attachment preview is the full file.
5. Ask responses by position ID and update the key. Retain the full image and panels together so future readers can reconstruct every crop's context.

## Choose a format that supports the audience's actual viewing

A shared folder with original-sized access files may work better than one compressed message. For a printed handout, use an overview on one page and detail panels on later pages with repeated photo IDs. Check captions and contrast for readability, and avoid requiring a complicated viewer just to see a relative's face.

Use the resolution checker to inspect the received crop, not only the source panorama. If detail is insufficient, say so and consider a better capture when the original is safely available. AI enlargement can improve viewing scale, but label generated derivatives separately. The package succeeds when a relative can identify a position, inspect its best available source and send a response that remains connected to the whole group.

## FAQs

Should I send only the largest file?

Provide a full context view and readable detail panels. A large panorama can still be tiny when automatically fit to a screen.

Do overlapping panels create duplicates?

They repeat coverage for orientation. Label the overlap and use one position key so repeated faces are not counted as different people.

Does a larger displayed face contain more detail?

It can be easier to inspect, but display enlargement alone does not add captured source detail.
