# How to Restore Group Photos Without Overlooking Changed Faces

Review every person in a restored class, wedding or family group photo. Protect small faces, compare at equal scale and reject invented features.

Quick answer

## The short version

Use the best available full-resolution source and check every face against it. Small faces contain little evidence, so AI can make them sharper by inventing features. A numbered review and an unchanged reference help catch errors missed in the overall image.

## A group photo has many separate quality checks

A large portrait and a tiny face in the back row are not equivalent inputs. In a group photograph, one person may occupy hundreds of pixels across while another occupies only a few dozen. Damage, motion and focus can also vary across the frame. A result that improves the front row may reinterpret the back row.

Start with the original file or a fresh scan rather than a messaging thumbnail. Keep the entire group, including people near the edges. Do not crop out context before establishing a master: the occasion, clothing and arrangement can matter as much to a family archive as the central faces.

## Define preservation requirements before generating

Ask for conservative damage repair, preservation of the number and positions of people, and no changes to facial structure, expression, hair, glasses or clothing. If the image is monochrome, decide explicitly whether it should remain monochrome. These requirements clarify intent; they do not make a generated result automatically trustworthy.

If a face is almost entirely missing, a model cannot know its original appearance from that region alone. Seek another photograph of the same person or a professional editor if identity matters. Supplying a reference can guide an interpretation, but it still needs review and should not be described as exact recovery.

## Review from left to right, row by row

Make a simple numbered list: front row left to right, then the next row. Compare each person's source and result at equal scale. Check jaw shape, eye spacing, smile, apparent age, glasses, hairline and recognisable marks. Also count people and look for merged shoulders, repeated faces or missing hands near group boundaries.

Then review the whole image at its intended display size. Large zoom helps detect changes but can also encourage unnecessary smoothing. Ask someone who knows the people to review the important faces; technical sharpness is not a substitute for recognition. Keep comments tied to the person number so feedback can be acted on consistently.

## Choose a result that is faithful, not merely crisp

If most of the group improves but two faces change, do not automatically accept the whole output. A local manual correction may be appropriate in an editor with selection controls. Otherwise, return to the original and choose a more conservative candidate. Preserve the original and the accepted output separately, with notes about any reconstructed areas.

## FAQs

Why do small background faces change more?

They provide fewer pixels and less detail for the model to use. Added sharpness can therefore represent invented features rather than recovered identity.

Should I restore each face separately?

Not automatically. Separate crops can lose context and create inconsistent results. Start with the best full image, then use controlled local editing only where the chosen editor supports it.
