# Photograph Small Items for Sale: Scale, Detail and Included Parts

Build an honest photo set for jewellery, collectibles or small used goods. Show scale, marks, flaws and included components without invented detail.

Quick answer

## The short version

Use a stable camera, enough working distance for focus and a simple contrasting background. Make separate whole-item, scale, detail and flaw views, then reconcile the set with what is included. Retake unreadable marks rather than using AI to invent lettering or remove wear.

## A close picture still needs context

A frame-filling brooch can look large when it is only a few centimetres wide. A polished detail can conceal whether the clasp is present. Before shooting, list the buyer's practical questions: dimensions, included pieces, construction, marks and condition. Build the images around those questions rather than taking several attractive but redundant front views.

eBay's photo guidance recommends showing scale where size is unclear and using clear flaw images. Apply those ideas to a deliberate shot plan. Check the destination's current policy before exporting, especially rules about added graphics and accurate representation. A ruler in a separate scale view is different from adding a decorative marketing overlay.

## A seven-image brooch worksheet

- 01 — Whole brooch from the front, with the complete outline visible. Keep the first view focused on the actual item.
- 02 — Back, showing pin and clasp construction without concealing their condition.
- 03 — Side view showing thickness and whether raised elements project from the base.
- 04 — Scale view with a readable ruler aligned beside the object. State measured dimensions in the description too.
- 05 — Maker's mark or material marking, captured in focus. Record unreadable text as unreadable; a photograph alone may not establish authenticity.
- 06 — Close view of a known chip or worn area, plus enough context to locate it.
- 07 — Included box or accessories with the item. Make clear what is and is not part of the sale.

## Worked example: a 35 mm item and a blurry mark

Suppose your item is 35 mm across. Your scale view shows the object beside millimetre markings at roughly the same distance from the camera. Put '35 mm measured across the widest points' in your listing notes. If perspective makes the ruler hard to compare, retake square to the measurement plane. Do not use a photo to imply greater precision than the measurement supports.

For a tiny maker's mark, the phone may fail to focus when moved too close. Back away until the mark is sharp, stabilise the camera and crop a copy if enough pixels remain. Compare a second capture. Generative enhancement that produces plausible initials is not a reliable reading of the mark and can mislead a buyer.

## Check the capture and delivery

1. Choose a neutral surface that separates the outline from the background. A pale object may need a mid-tone surface; a reflective object may need another light position.
2. Take full views first, then scale, condition and markings. Keep lighting consistent and check glare on shiny surfaces.
3. Open the selected full files and compare each with the object. Delete neither originals nor condition evidence when choosing a hero view.
4. Make compatible exports without repeatedly recompressing an earlier JPEG. Check dimensions, upright orientation and the marketplace crop.
5. Audit the final sequence against your included-parts list. Keep the inventory ID in filenames so a similar second item does not inherit the wrong pictures.

## Edit presentation without altering evidence

Cropping empty background can help the item read clearly. Removing a real chip, straightening a bent pin or inventing a clean hallmark changes what is being represented. Use a new capture for blur and reflections; use ordinary restrained corrections only when they preserve the actual condition.

If a cutout is used for the hero image, inspect the clasp, fine chain and openings against the source. Keep supporting views with real context. This checklist does not promise sales or authenticate an object. Its success is a coherent image set from which a buyer can assess size, included components and visible condition.

## FAQs

Can AI sharpen a maker's mark into reliable text?

A generated reading may be invented. Retake the mark in focus or state that it is unreadable; verify important identifications with independent evidence.

Should a scale ruler appear in every photo?

A separate clear scale view is often enough, with measured dimensions in the description. Keep the hero view focused on the actual item and check destination rules.
