Quick answer

## The short version

Choose Restore for damage repair and colour-cast correction; choose Upscale when enlargement is the main task. If both are needed, review restoration first and enlarge only the accepted output. Check the downloaded dimensions: restoration can reduce a large scan's pixel count, and extra pixels do not establish authentic detail.

## Define this purchase decision

A small photograph and a damaged photograph create different purchasing decisions. Upscaling enlarges the file but is not the same operation as scratch repair. Restoration repairs and interprets the image but does not promise to preserve all input pixel dimensions. Choosing both automatically can spend credits without solving the actual objection to the source.

The released RestoreBunny restoration configuration uses a 2K setting with the input aspect ratio. A documented large-scan example produced fewer pixels than its source. That supports checking your own delivered file, not claiming every output has a specific size. The standalone Upscale tool follows a separate processing route.

## Worked decision example

Worked example: a clean 1200×800 file is intended for a 6×4-inch print. It supplies 1200 ÷ 6 = 200 PPI and 800 ÷ 4 = 200 PPI. If the printer requests a 300-PPI comparison target, 1800×1200 is the pixel target. An enlargement may address that shortage; a scratch-repair pass is unnecessary if there is no damage you want changed.

For a separate scratched 3600×2400 scan, repair is the first task. Suppose its downloaded restoration is 2400×1600; that is an illustrative output, not a prediction. At 12×8 inches it supplies 200 PPI. Review identity and repair first, then decide whether another successful upscaling operation is useful. A rejected restoration should not become the input to a paid enlargement merely because it is the newest file.

## Complete the decision worksheet

- List the defect: visible damage, colour cast, insufficient dimensions or a combination. Treat blur and missing detail as limitations, not automatically as enlargement needs.
- Specify the destination: screen size or proposed print dimensions. Inspect the actual input pixels with the free resolution checker before selecting a tool.
- Choose the first operation that addresses the primary defect. Save its result and compare important regions with the source at matching displayed size.
- Approve a second operation only if the first result passes and its remaining dimensions warrant enlargement. Record two successful operations separately in the credit budget.

## Resolve the buyer objections

Will 8x upscaling cost eight restoration credits? The current FAQ states one credit per successful upscaled image regardless of the listed 2x, 4x or 8x level. Read the charge shown in your account before starting. This does not mean 8x supplies eight times the authentic source detail.

Can I judge the result by the new dimensions alone? No. Changed eyes, repeated texture or sharpened compression can survive enlargement. Open the delivered file, compare it with the source and inspect it at the intended display size. A large generated file can still be unsuitable for a family print.

## Keep a useful decision record

Record the operation order beside each accepted file. An enlarged untouched source, a restored source and an enlarged restoration are three different derivatives even if all have similar names. If restoration introduces an error, return to the authoritative source rather than applying another tool to conceal it. If an enlargement adds repeated texture, the previously accepted repaired file may still be useful at a smaller size. This creates a reversible stopping point after each paid operation. Save intermediate accepted versions locally so that you do not need to generate them again simply to undo a later decision. Judge the final copy in its intended use, while retaining the lineage that explains how it was made.

## Choose the next action

Use the free resolution checker and print comparison tools to establish the pixel arithmetic before purchasing. Try Photo Restoration when there is real repair work, or Upscale for an accepted file needing enlargement. You do not need a paid restoration pass simply to discover the source dimensions.

After each operation, save the approved file before the ten-day image window ends. Keep its operation history so you can distinguish the untouched source, repaired derivative and enlarged derivative. Buy a pack for the confirmed operations remaining, rather than assuming every photo must pass through every tool.

Use the existing free single-photo print exporter for a saved JPEG or PNG when its paper presets fit your task. Preview fit with white borders or fill with a movable crop, select the planning PPI and inspect the exported file. It does not restore missing detail, certify printer quality or supply a finished album-book export.

## FAQs

Does Restore preserve my input pixel count?

No fixed input-pixel preservation is promised. The released 2K restoration configuration can reduce a large scan. Check the delivered dimensions.

Does Upscale remove a colour cast?

The documented standalone route enlarges images and bypasses the restoration prompt. Choose Restore when repair or cast correction is the task.

Does a 300-PPI calculation certify print quality?

No. It describes pixel density. Fidelity, focus, crop and the printer requirements still need separate review.
