Quick answer

## The short version

Agree on what may change before retouching a headshot. Temporary distractions, lighting adjustments and permanent identifying features are different decisions.

## A capture or editing plan

Review the original with the subject and identify the specific issue in each proposed edit. Separate a dust mark on clothing from a freckle, scar or wrinkle that belongs to the person. Keep a version before retouching and inspect the finished image at both full size and its intended display size. Ask the subject to approve likeness as well as surface appearance.

## When to change the approach

Global smoothing can remove meaningful texture and still leave the actual distraction untouched. Prefer the smallest agreed edit over a general request to make the person look younger or perfect.

## Worked planning example

Planning example: A portrait has a lint speck on a jacket and a permanent cheek scar. The brief permits removing the lint but retains the scar. A result that removes both has exceeded the agreed scope, even if it looks polished.

## If the first attempt fails

When an edit is difficult to judge, place the original and edited version at the same magnification and alternate between them. Check the boundary of the edited area as well as its center. If the subject notices a changed identifying feature, return to the earlier version and narrow the edit. Avoid making a stronger edit merely because a small web preview conceals the difference.

## Before you finish

1. Record permitted changes before editing.
2. Keep permanent features unless explicitly discussed.
3. Review a before-and-after pair with the subject.
