Quick answer

## The short version

Compare viewpoints based on the information the food needs to show. Top view, a moderate angle and eye level can reveal very different aspects of the same serving.

## A capture or editing plan

Take three quick reference frames before styling the full scene. Use an overhead view to inspect arrangement, a moderate angle to show depth and a low view to assess layers or height. Compare the plate rim, main ingredients and background in each. Choose one primary angle for the deliverable, then move the light or props to support that view.

## When to change the approach

Do not choose an angle only because it is fashionable. If it hides the filling, portion or preparation the customer needs to see, it is the wrong primary view.

## Worked planning example

Planning example: A cake slice shows its top decoration from above but its layers from the side. A moderate angle includes both, making it a stronger main image for a page describing the layered cake.

## If the first attempt fails

If a chosen angle conceals the defining ingredient, take a second view before changing the styling. A tall layered item and a flat bowl do not reveal their structure in the same way. Compare what each image communicates at a small size. Select the view that honestly describes the serving rather than the angle that happens to match an unrelated food photograph you like.

## Before you finish

1. Compare three viewpoints with the same dish.
2. Identify the information each view hides.
3. Select the primary view before final styling.
