Switching to HD now does not improve a photo already sent. Upscaling can make a remaining compressed copy easier to view, but cannot reliably recover discarded faces, writing or other exact detail. ## First check whether the file or only the preview is blurry Download the actual attachment and open it outside the chat. A small chat thumbnail is not a reliable measure of the file behind it. Check pixel dimensions and compare the saved file with the best source you have. A screenshot of the conversation records the preview and interface; it is not a substitute for downloading the photograph. WhatsApp also documents blurry photos when it can no longer find the file on your device or SD card. If the full file is unavailable, ask the sender to send it again rather than enhancing the chat preview. If the actual download is still soft, separate compression from capture blur. Compare the actual files because transfer settings and source dimensions vary. At a 4×6-inch fill crop, the 900×1200 source leaves 800×1200 pixels, or 200 PPI. The 3024×4032 original leaves 2688×4032 pixels, or 672 PPI. Both lose part of the width because a 3:4 photo differs from a 2:3 print. Available pixels do not guarantee focus or authentic detail, but retrieving the original supplies real source information that resizing a smaller copy cannot. ## When upscaling is worth trying If no better copy survives, preserve the compressed source and try one conservative enhancement on a duplicate. Compare at the same display size: a larger result can look more impressive merely because it fills the screen. Inspect eyes, teeth, lettering and recognisable marks.
