Quick answer

## The short version

Compare a line across more than one saved scan and, where safe, change the print's position or orientation. A mark that stays in scanner coordinates is a capture-system clue; a mark that moves with the photograph is a source clue. Follow the scanner's own maintenance instructions before recapturing.

## Do not repair a whole batch before finding the cause

A line running through several scans can come from the capture system, from a mark on each print or from later processing. Starting with digital scratch removal may conceal a problem that affects hundreds of files. Keep the current scans and identify when the line first appears: preview, final capture, export or shared copy. A viewer display artifact should not be treated as physical damage.

Epson's troubleshooting documentation lists glass and scanning-surface maintenance for lines appearing across scanned images. Those instructions are model-specific. Consult the exact scanner manual, turn it off or unplug it when instructed, and keep originals away during maintenance. Advice about cleaning a scanner is not advice about cleaning a photograph; never apply a device cleaner to an heirloom print.

## Use coordinates to separate the hypotheses

Choose a sound test print that you can position safely. Note a line's location relative to the saved scan edge and relative to an image feature such as a coat button. Reposition or rotate the print without forcing it, then capture with the same settings. Preserve unrotated outputs for the coordinate comparison, because an automatic rotation may make the line appear to follow the photograph.

Repeat with another sound print if necessary. A line at the same scanner position across different images supports a system hypothesis, but does not by itself identify the component. A mark that follows the print could be source damage or capture processing responding to that detail. Inspect the original visually where safe and retain uncertainty if the test cannot separate the possibilities.

## Worked example: the band stays at column 300

Suppose a vertical band appears around pixel column 300 in two full capture files. After a print is shifted right, its subject moves but the band remains around column 300. That is a reason to investigate the scanner path rather than retouch the subject. The column number is an illustrative measurement, not an expected location for any scanner.

After maintenance following the manufacturer's instructions, capture the test again. If the band disappears, document the before-and-after files and identify the affected batch range. Do not assume every earlier scan was affected equally. If the band persists or the device shows another fault, seek product support; digital retouching may make a viewing copy useful but does not resolve the capture problem.

## Copy a line-diagnosis log

1. File and stage: name the capture, record whether the line is visible in the preview or final file, and check another viewer before diagnosing the source.
2. Position: record distance from a scan edge and the relationship to a recognisable feature. Note whether automatic cropping or rotation was active.
3. Controlled change: use a safe print repositioning test or a second sound original, holding resolution and optional corrections constant.
4. Maintenance: cite the model's actual manual and record the action performed. Do not invent a cleaning procedure from a different device's instructions.
5. Result and batch scope: save the recapture, mark affected IDs for review, and distinguish 'system likely' from 'component confirmed'. Reconcile replacement masters before making restored derivatives.

## Recapture and reconcile instead of silently substituting

When a better capture is available, preserve its link to the same photo ID and mark the earlier file as superseded for viewing work. Keep the diagnostic files if they explain why an earlier derivative contained a line. A batch manifest should show which originals were recaptured so you do not mix sources during later restoration.

If only the digital file survives, you may be unable to establish whether the line came from the print or scanner. Record that limitation and make any repair as a separate derivative. Check the repaired region against neighbouring patterns, text and faces, where a plausible fill can still be wrong. The useful outcome of diagnosis is a better-supported next action, not certainty beyond what the test actually shows.

## FAQs

Can I clean the print with scanner cleaner?

No. Device maintenance instructions apply to the device. Physical photograph treatment requires appropriate conservation guidance.

Does rotating the file prove where the mark came from?

No. Change the physical capture position where safe, then compare coordinates. Rotating an existing file only moves all its pixels together.

What if I cannot recapture the original?

Keep the source, label the cause uncertain and make a separately recorded repair copy for the intended viewing use.
