Quick answer

## The short version

Inspect bright and dark regions alongside a histogram, then compare the capture master with the edited export. A tonal pile-up at an endpoint is a clipping clue, not proof that useful detail existed there. Rescan or recapture when a copy loses detail visible in the original; lowering brightness cannot establish absent source detail.

## A pleasing contrast change can erase important texture

White wedding fabric, dark uniforms and handwriting on a pale border can be vulnerable to strong contrast adjustments. A thumbnail may look clearer while those regions become flat. Adobe's histogram guidance describes tonal distribution and clipping clues at the range endpoints. Use that graph to ask where information might have been compressed, then inspect the actual picture regions.

A histogram does not know which pixels represent a face, blank border or genuine deep shadow. Endpoint counts alone do not identify an unacceptable edit. The source may already contain featureless white paper or black background. Record the region and compare versions before claiming that a clipped graph proves recoverable detail.

## Compare three stages when you can

Examine the safely accessible original, the selected capture master and the final export. If the original shows fabric folds but the scan does not, capture settings or lighting may be responsible. If the master shows them but the edited export does not, return to the tonal adjustment or export pipeline. Keep these diagnoses separate because the next actions differ.

View the same file in another appropriate viewer when a display appears suspicious. Screen brightness, a profile mismatch or a poorly lit room can affect what you perceive. A histogram can help distinguish file values from a display impression, but it still cannot establish historical colour or source texture. Use a consistent viewing setup for the comparison and record any remaining uncertainty.

## Worked example: the dress loses folds after a contrast edit

A fictional master contains distinguishable pale folds in a dress. The viewing edit raises contrast until those folds become a flat white region. Reopening the master confirms the folds were present before editing. Reduce or revise the adjustment on a copy and compare the export again. This is a reversible editing issue, not a reason to invent fabric with generative repair.

In another image, both the original print and the scan show a uniformly pale patch where glare obscured the dress when the photograph was made. Darkening that patch may produce grey pixels but does not reveal verified folds. The correct record distinguishes available tonal information from a plausible reconstruction. These examples describe evidence, not universal histogram thresholds.

## Use a tonal-loss worksheet

- Region: identify the important light or dark area by subject and location. 'Lower left dark jacket' is more useful than 'shadows bad'.
- Source comparison: state whether detail is visible in the physical source, master, derivative or none of the accessible versions.
- Histogram clue: note endpoint concentration or channel clipping where your editor exposes it. Do not turn the clue into a claim about a specific hidden feature.
- Controlled change: revise one contrast or capture variable and save a separate file. Keep crop, display scale and comparison region consistent.
- Destination: check the final preview or a relevant print proof because a subtle screen distinction may not survive delivery as expected.
- Decision: retain source tone, revise edit, recapture safely or document unavailable detail. Record which action is supported by the comparison.

## Choose readability without rewriting the source

A document-like reproduction may deliberately preserve the source's low contrast while a family slideshow copy uses a modest viewing adjustment. Label their purposes and keep the master. Do not clip a whole image merely to make one face more prominent; selective, controlled work may better preserve clothing and captions, if your editor supports it.

The resolution checker reports size, not tonal depth or surviving texture. More pixels cannot establish what an overexposed or blocked region once contained. If you use AI to make a flat region visually coherent, document that interpretation and review any new details against the source. A good tonal check ends with a supported decision about a specific area, rather than a graph that looks ideal at the expense of the photograph.

## FAQs

Must the histogram avoid both endpoints?

No. Genuine black, white or blank borders can reach endpoints. Inspect meaningful regions and compare the source.

Can darkening a white patch recover detail?

Only information still present in the file can become visible through tonal adjustment. New generated texture is interpretation.

When should I recapture?

When a safe source comparison shows useful detail that the current capture omitted, and the capture conditions can be improved.
