Quick answer

## The short version

Use clear lettering, the capture record and corroborating photographs to test left-right orientation. Keep the received version, and flip only a separate copy when the evidence supports it. Jewellery, handedness or a remembered pose alone may be weak clues, and some historic image processes require specialist context.

## Orientation changes can alter historical interpretation

A mirrored image moves a uniform badge, wedding ring or building entrance to the opposite side. That can matter to captions and comparisons, even though the portrait still looks plausible. Check orientation before using side-specific details as evidence. Distinguish a horizontal flip from rotation: turning a picture upright does not correct left-right reversal.

Epson's documented scanner software includes mirroring controls, showing that the capture pipeline can intentionally change orientation. Phone camera and editing histories may introduce other changes. Record the source chain and the controls actually used. Do not assume that the version a relative sends is either correct or reversed solely because it differs from another copy.

## Use readable text carefully

Clear ordinary lettering can provide a strong directional clue, but it still needs context. A reversed sign in a reflection, a deliberately mirrored studio setting or an unusual source process can complicate the inference. Record what you see and ask whether the text belongs directly to the scene or appears in a reflected surface.

For a film scan, consult the scanner or lab record about film orientation rather than guessing from a single facial feature. For early photographic objects, process-specific image orientation may be part of the object itself. This guide does not diagnose historic processes from a thumbnail. When that context matters, retain the object record and seek specialist information before labelling its image incorrect.

## Worked example: a shop sign supports a delivery correction

A fictional family street photograph is supplied as a JPEG with the shop sign reversed. An earlier scan has readable lettering and matches another independently documented view of the storefront. The newer JPEG's editing history also records a horizontal flip. Together, those clues support making a corrected delivery copy from the earlier scan. Keep the received version in the source history rather than deleting it.

If the only clue is that a relative usually wore a watch on a certain wrist, the evidence is weaker. They may have changed habits, the recollection may be mistaken or the pictured person may be someone else. Label orientation uncertain and avoid using the watch to both establish the person's name and prove the flip; that would make the reasoning circular.

## Use an orientation evidence ledger

- Received file: name the supplier, exact filename and known capture or editing steps. Preserve that file before making any correction.
- Directional clue: record clear text, asymmetrical architecture or a source-specific orientation note. State whether the clue could itself be reflected or uncertain.
- Independent comparison: link another documented image or capture record. Avoid counting a copy of the same flipped JPEG as corroboration.
- Alternative explanation: consider reflection, intentional editing, uncertain identification or historic process. Do not hide a plausible alternative merely to choose an upright-looking result.
- Action: retain, make a separate horizontal-flip derivative, or leave unresolved. Write the reason and the editor's date.
- Caption check: revise any side-specific descriptions in delivery notes, while retaining a clear account of which version the description concerns.

## Keep corrected views traceable

Save a corrected copy with a simple version label and record 'horizontal flip applied' in its history. Do not overwrite the only capture master. If a restored derivative was generated from the reversed source, it may contain other changes as well; flipping that derivative back is not equivalent to restoring the correct master from the outset.

Use a comparison sheet when relatives need to inspect the alternatives, with each labelled by orientation and source. Avoid framing the unverified choice as a settled historical fact. The resolution checker can confirm output dimensions, but orientation requires evidence from content and provenance. A useful result is a correction supported by a transparent source chain, or an explicit unresolved status that prevents further assumptions.

## FAQs

Does a reversed ring prove the photo is mirrored?

No. Hand use, identification and recollection can be uncertain. Seek clearer text or independent source evidence.

Is a horizontal flip the same as rotation?

No. A flip reverses left and right, while rotation changes which edge is at the top.

Should I delete the mirrored version?

Keep the received source and record a corrected derivative so later editors can trace what changed.
