Quick answer

## The short version

Place firmly dated photographs first, then add uncertain photographs as ranges rather than invented dates. Keep event dates separate from print and scan dates, and record conflicts. A timeline can show gaps and overlapping possibilities without claiming one complete sequence.

## A timeline asks a collection question

Dating one photograph asks when its scene happened. Building a timeline asks how a set of photographs relates to life events and to one another. You need a display that accepts uncertainty, repeated events and missing periods. A simple list with a start year, end year and evidence note is often better than software that demands a specific day for every item.

The Library of Congress' primary-source analysis approach separates observation from interpretation. Use that distinction when aligning pictures. A caption in a different hand, a later reprint and an upload timestamp have different evidential roles. Record them before deciding the position. Do not make the digital file's date stand in for the event just because it is easy to sort.

## Choose anchors that actually constrain the sequence

An anchor might be a documented wedding date connected to a particular photograph, or a dated inscription whose meaning is clear. Write what links the anchor to the image. A calendar visible on a wall might indicate a year, but could also have remained there; record the assumption. A birthday portrait may identify an occasion without proving the age if the caption was supplied much later.

For uncertain images, use intervals and relationships. 'Before the 1954 move', 'between 1952 and 1956' and 'probably the same outing as PH-0191' can be more useful than a guessed 1953. Relationships should have their own evidence notes. Two prints with similar paper do not automatically show the same event, and neighbouring album pages do not guarantee chronological order.

## Worked example: overlapping ranges stay overlapping

Suppose PH-0101 has a documented 1950 event date, PH-0102 is believed to fall between 1951 and 1954, and PH-0103 between 1953 and 1956. PH-0102 and PH-0103 overlap in 1953–1954, so the ranges alone cannot determine their order. Display both in a provisional band rather than placing one first and letting the layout imply proof.

A later letter might show the house in PH-0103 was not occupied until 1955. That narrows its range to 1955–1956 if the identification of the house is sound. Now it can follow PH-0102. The timeline changed because a stated constraint changed, not because an algorithm assigned a more convincing date. Keep the earlier assessment in the notes for future review.

## Use a timeline row with explicit evidence

- Photo ID and event label: describe the scene without embedding an uncertain person's name as a fact. Link the capture master and any back caption.
- Earliest and latest plausible dates: record the boundary evidence and whether the range is firm or provisional. Unknown boundaries should stay blank and be labelled unknown.
- Date type: event, print production, inscription, digital capture or later interpretation. Only event dates belong in the main life-event sequence.
- Sequence relation: before, after, possibly same event, or order unresolved. State the clue behind each relationship rather than treating album order as decisive.
- Conflict and next check: name the contradictory record and one follow-up task. A disputed range should be visible to the editor before a timeline is shared.
- Review history: keep assessor, assessment date and reason for a revision. This helps distinguish a newly found document from a change in editorial preference.

## Make the public version readable without flattening the research

Choose a few established anchors for a slideshow or family-history spread, and use honest headings such as 'early 1950s' for uncertain groups. If a precise ordering would imply more than you know, group images by theme and state that their sequence is editorial. A timeline can be informative while leaving some photos outside it.

Retain a detailed research version with ranges, citations and open questions. Review the displayed captions after every date change; otherwise an updated spreadsheet may coexist with outdated names in a PDF. Link the photo IDs so the versions remain traceable. The goal is a sequence someone can understand and challenge, rather than a smooth story whose uncertainties have disappeared.

## FAQs

Can I use file dates to build the timeline?

They can describe digital capture or export activity. They do not generally establish when a photographed historical event occurred.

What if two date ranges overlap?

Keep the order unresolved until another constraint separates them. Display a provisional group rather than inventing a precise sequence.

Must every photograph be included?

No. Keep undated and disputed items in a linked research list, then include them when the evidence or the presentation supports it.
